KIA Niro: MDPS Tuning Data Setting | Steering Column and Shaft Repair procedures
- Since MDPS can store various tuning maps with different steering feelings in the ECU and different steering feelings depending on the application area and the vehicle engine type, it is necessary to set codes appropriate for the application area and the vehicle.
Warning
If missing the MDPS Tuning Data Setting, a problem may occur with motor driven power steering performance.
Warning
MDPS Tuning Data Setting procedure is necessary for
- DTC indicator illuminate (DTC Code: C1702, Application Area Fault).
- Excessive different steering feeling.
- Unstable steering.
MDPS Tuning Data Setting Procedure
- Select "MDPS Tuning Data Setting(Backup and Write)"
- Proceed with the test according to the screen instructions.
- Select "C2" Manual Button.
Steering Column and Shaft Repair procedures
Replacement
- Disconnect the battery negative cable.
- Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
- Remove the driver airbag module.
(Refer to Restraint - "Driver Airbag (DAB) Module and Clock Spring")
- Disconnect the connector.
- Loosen the bolt (A) and then remove the steering wheel.
Tightening torque: 39.2 - 49.0 N*m (4.0 - 5.0 kgf*m, 28.9 - 36.1 lb*ft)
Warning
- Do not hammer on the steering wheel to remove it; it may damage the steering column.
- Do not reuse the bolt.
- Loosen the screw and then remove the lower shroud.
- Remove the clock spring.
(Refer to Restraint - "Driver Airbag (DAB) Module and Clock Spring")
- Loosen the screw (A) and disconnect the connector (B) to remove the multifunction switch.
- Remove the crash pad lower panel.
(Refer to Body (Interior and Exterior) -"Crash Pad Lower Panel")
- Remove the knee airbag.
(Refer to Restraint - "Knee airbag (KAB)")
- Remove the universal joint bolt (A).
Tightening torque : 32.4 - 37.3 N*m (3.3 - 3.8 kgf*m, 23.9 - 27.5 lb*ft)
Warning
- Keep the neutral-range to prevent damaging the clock spring inner cable when steering the wheel.
- Do not reuse the bolt.
- Disconnect the MDPS connector.
- Loosen the steering column nuts.
Tightening torque : 24.5 - 29.4 N*m (2.5 - 3.0 kgf*m, 18.1 - 21.7 lb*ft)
- Loosen the steering column bolt and then remove the steering column.
Tightening torque : 53.9 - 58.8 N*m (5.5 - 6.0 kgf*m, 39.8 - 43.4 lb*ft)
- Install in the reverse order of removal.
- Register "ASP calibration EPS type recognition" by GDS after replacing steering column assembly.
Disassembly
Universal joint assembly
- Loosen the bolt (A) and then disconnect the universal joint assembly from the steering column assembly.
Tightening torque : 49.0 - 58.8 N*m (5.0 - 6.0 kgf*m, 36.2 - 43.4 lb*ft)
- Install in the reverse order of removal.
Inspection
- Check the steering column for damage and deformation.
- Check the joint bearing for damage and wear.
- Check the tilt bracket for damage and cracks.
